Nearly one billion people globally live with some form of mental health challenges, and 80% of them reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The inequality continues with support access, as it has been estimated that up to 90% of people who need mental health support in LMICs are not receiving it yet everyone has a basic human right to good mental, emotional, and physical health. Women bear a particular burden, especially during the perinatal period when they need the most support.
Motherhood is often portrayed as a time of joy and fulfillment, but for many women, it is also a period of significant mental health challenges. The stress associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period can be overwhelming, with many new mothers experiencing a range of emotional difficulties. From the physical and hormonal changes of pregnancy to the demands of caring for a newborn, mothers face immense pressure. Common perinatal mental disorders (CPMDs), including prenatal and postpartum depression, anxiety, and somatic disorders, are the leading complications of pregnancy and childbirth globally. After childbirth, the transition to motherhood can be particularly challenging. The postpartum period is often marked by sleep deprivation, changes in identity and relationships, and the demands of caring for a newborn. These stressors can trigger or exacerbate mental health issues such as postpartum depression and anxiety in about one in five women and hence the need for the Empowermums program
EmpowerMums is program is designed to address the unique mental health needs of mothers. Our mission is to provide comprehensive support, resources, and a sense of community to empower mothers to thrive both mentally and emotionally.
EmpowerMums offers facilitated support groups where mothers can share their experiences, challenges, and triumphs in a safe and confidential environment. These groups provide a platform for emotional expression, peer support, and mutual encouragement.
Our program includes a series of workshops focused on mental health education, stress management, self-care practices, and parenting skills. These workshops aim to equip mothers with practical tools and knowledge to enhance their wellbeing.
We provide access to professional counselling and therapy services tailored specifically to the needs of mothers. Our trained therapists use evidence-based approaches to help mothers navigate their mental health challenges and build resilience in different stages of motherhood: from prenatal to postpartum and later in life.
By fostering a supportive community and providing essential mental health resources, we aim to empower mothers to lead healthier, happier lives. Join us in our mission to ensure that every mother receives the support she deserves. Together, we can create a future where mothers are celebrated, supported, and empowered to thrive.
At CSRI we focus on developing evidence-based community initiatives that will lead to reduced suicide cases and supportive social support systems for the victim’s friends, families and community.
Through collaboration with various stakeholders in the field we design programs and case models that predict and reduce suicide cases.
